Jere Suontausta: Imponderabilia
Imponderabilia is a series of sculptural light artworks, a viewpoint and an artistic practice. The works share a common non-rational artistic process, consisting of happy accidents, some found materials and heaps of stumbling-upon.
This version of Imponderabilia consists of five works, created in 2022 and 2023. The work will expand further in the future. The self-built LED circuits installed inside the sculptures bring forth hidden material, reflective and optical qualities of the curious objects of which the artworks are assembled from. The end result can also be interpreted as a way of painting: the surrounding space is a canvas, the sculpture is a brush and light is the paint.
Imponderabilia examines non-understanding and presents certain moments as still images and objects, compressed from the ever-emergent processes. As the stream of possibilities flows, every now and then an artwork may surface, or get caught into a rake that just happened to be there. “Maybe the inability to fully comprehend the birth of an idea is, in the end, what makes it endlessly inspiring. It might not be entirely wise to declare that understanding, by itself, would be somehow categorically harmful – but to be able to put it aside, to successfully evade the process of understanding and focus on embracing irrationality instead would seem to introduce us to someone we didn’t know was possible to meet in the first place.”
