Jere Suontausta: Mattermobile
A hypno-kinetic artwork that is experienced when lying down, 2019
A kinetic artwork that can be observed when lying down on a mattress, Mattermobile is a lo-fi poetic depiction of a grand cosmic motion and the seemingly never-ending circulation of matter. It draws from childhood memories of decorative mobiles and mixes these with the non-understandable scale and nature of the metaphysical flurry we are a tiny bit of, offering a moment to zone out from the mundanity of everyday life.
The motion, materials and dynamic lighting incorporated in the artwork have all been developed with trial-and-error based methods, carefully iterating until they started to live and interact just a bit beyond the control of the artist.
Mattermobile is an outcome of a combination two leading ideas: continuing the practice and thoughts from my previous kinetic artwork Space-time Continuum (2017) and the task to create a work related to the theme of hypnosis.
