Jere Suontausta: Metempsychosis

Kinetic artwork: a lifetime of a light in a 60 second cycle.

Metempsychosis is a lo-fi kinetic light artwork consisting of a vintage pocket light, a dessert tray, and a simple motor. Built as-simple-as-possible sculpture with found materials, the artwork focuses around the slowly revolving and evolving travel of the directional light. During its 60 second cycle (a lifetime), the light shines both in the surrounding space and towards the viewer, while also working its way to functioning as an analog projection apparatus with reflections and shadows cast by the carefully placed objects. This kinetic cycle of the work represents the light itself progressing from one state to another, while also capturing a mind, a life, and a world to the duration of one minute – to be repeated again and again.
