Kirsti Taiviola: Kehrä (Spindle)

Installation, 2021

Kehrä (Spindle) begun from a wish to witness the period after the winter solstice when the days gradually become brighter. For six months beginning from 21.12.2017 to 21.6.2018 I got up every morning to capture the sunrise and to write down a brief description of my perception of the moment. For me, the project was a way to observe the colours of the sky, light, the weather, and the essence of a fleeting moment. I translated my notes into work instructions for glass objects which were to be coloured with glass powder colours added by trailing in layers. The mould-blown glass parts were then made in collaboration with the students of Tavastia Vocational College’s Glass School in Nuutajärvi, Finland. Each glass part is illuminated from within with LED-lights.
