Mia Erlin and Heini Myllyoja: FLUMEN

FLUMEN is a public artwork located on the facade of a kindergarten in Kemi, Finland. The work figuratively combines the waves of the sea, living light, and sound into one complete work of art. The name of the work Flumen refers to the flow of waveform both concretely and as a temporal phenomenon. It was inspired by the kindergarten's maritime location and the nature of the Kemi region. The core concept of the work is the continuous change of the local natural environment and the organic world adapting to change. Flumen mirrors its surroundings and uses lighting to create a living web of reflections and indirectly lit surfaces as the movement of lighting changes, like wave movements. The soundscape supports the work, creating its own dynamic layer; familiar local elements of nature are combined with acoustic instruments in such a way that they form a seamless soundscape. The sound of the work strengthens the viewing experience, while also allowing room for the viewer's own interpretations.
