Pasi Rauhala: Luola ja Löydös

A video sculpture, that interacts with artificial and natural light, located in Kummun koulu (Kummu's school), Outokumpu.

The video sculpture is located in two stairwells of the Kummun school building in Outokumpu. The title, Luola ja Löydös, refers to Outokumpu's history as a mining town, in addition to being the theme of the work. The work consists of shapes resembling a geometric rock structure attached to the walls – as if the rock itself were protruding from the wall. These forms again consist of triangle/pyramid-shaped pieces of different sizes, which together form a rock outcrop.

On top of the relief-like triangular shapes is a mapped video projection of colour surfaces that moves from one surface to another. The two parts of the work have their own themes. The projection in the school's art wing includes e.g. animations referring to the mixing of colours and the larger entity refers more to the environment and mining history in terms of its content. In turn, the sunlight slowly erases the surfaces of the triangular shapes and when it gets dark, the miner's headlamp makes its own patterns and sharper shadows on the surface. A special feature of the larger part of the work is the sun shining directly onto the work through the window. Over the course of the day, the light moves from one wall to another, where pyramid shapes are attached, with a mirror on one side. With these mirrors, triangles of light are projected, which move according to the sun onto the shape of the work. This only happens on those rare occasions when the sun shines at the right time from the right angle and thus creates the randomness caused by the cycle of nature in the work.

The triangle/pyramid shape is also somewhat ambiguous when viewed from different angles, and in different lights it is difficult to tell whether the shape is protruding or inverted. The projection technology used in the work is programmed to change the video content according to the time of day and to turn on and off automatically according to a schedule agreed together with the client.
