Simo Ripatti: Occasion

Occasion, 2023. Moving image that makes use of light and shadow.

Occasion is an installation that contains a moving image that makes use of light and shadow. The work interprets the moment where perception without thought can cause a sense of vagueness. An unexpected and strange situation can paralyse you before you realise what has happened – as if a safe situation suddenly turns menacing or appears different than it actually is. Perception connects the work to reality, but only by comparing a recollection, questioning memory and perception, and conscious thinking can one form the actual experience.

Master of Fine Arts (MFA), b. 1975, lives in Leppäkoski, Finland
