Timo A. Aalto & Lotta-Pia Kallio: Valoisa Luutarha

Valoisa Luutarha, a commissioned work, that combines video and light projected onto a stone church.

Valoisa Luutarha was created as a commissioned work for the parish of Salo in November 2023. Together with Salo Pumpkin Week it reached as many as 15 000-20 000 visitors, who came to enjoy video and light together with ancient ecclesiastical architecture and medieval music.

In the two videos marches a macabre style dance parade of animated fantasy hybrid creatures found in medieval book illustrations. From time to time, the peaceful setting is broken by a surprising march of skeletons, which reminds the viewer of the transience of life. The rest of the church is also be illuminated. In a changing and synchronized light world, shapes and figures move along the walls as shadows with the help of mechanically moving equipment and the wind randomly. The shadows are formed according to the materials of the video footage, so that the whole remains intact.

The color scheme of the piece is kept together with a few selected colours. The artwork contains medieval type of music, filling the whole church area with a mystical feeling.
